My passion for science has been unwavering since my own school days and has been pursued through university and subsequently via a career in environmental consultancy.

I studied for a BSc in Biology at Manchester University followed by an MSc in Pollution and Environmental Control, which then led to my career as an Aquatic Scientist. A large part of the reason I decided to become a teacher was to inspire children using my direct experience of science in ‘the real world’ and so I embarked on a PGCE course in Secondary Science Teaching.

I now have twelve years of teaching experience gained from a range of schools located in both city and rural locations. During this time I have acquired a valuable insight into how children learn and, in turn, have learned how to adapt my teaching style to suit the needs of pupils with a range of abilities and from a diversity of backgrounds. My specialism is in Biology, which I have taught at A-level, in addition to all three sciences at GCSE and KS3 level. Inevitably I now hold a thorough understanding of the specification requirements from different exam boards.

Tutoring has allowed me to channel my knowledge and experience into those students who are seeking additional support and encouragement. It is satisfying to help boost their confidence in understanding the scientific content or in improving exam technique, or both, but ultimately to improve the grades achieved.
