I am a writer, university lecturer and researcher with six years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My specialisms are English Literature, History and Cultural Studies and I have taught courses in research skills, critical thinking, poetry and poetics, modern literature and essay writing.

This ‘Research Skills’ course focuses on the fundamentals of research for essay writing, academic work, university presentations and independent research. It covers everything from essay planning and library research to citations and bibliographies. These skills are crucial for any university degree and are increasingly important for A-Level research projects as well. This course also includes a session on identifying quality research and how to navigate online search engines and other resources when completing a project. Delivered in an engaging, jargon-free style, this course is suitable for anyone about to start a university degree or already enrolled in one. A-Level/Pre-University/Mature Students

This version of this course introduces pre-university students of all ages and backgrounds to university research skills and methods in the humanities. It covers online research skills, citation and bibliography skills, essay planning, plagiarism and good research practices, and many more topics. This course is suitable for anyone heading to university soon to pursue a degree in the humanities. Examples will be taken from across the subject spectrum with a focus on English Literature and History.

University Enrolled Students

This refresher course is designed for students already enrolled in a university degree. It covers all the basics of research methods and skills and has an optional dissertation project add-on which can be discussed when arranging the sessions. The dissertation project session covers methods and skills required for dissertation research and writing including citation management and long-form essay writing.

I am a graduate of Reading University, where I completed an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Classical Civilisations, a masters degree in Modern and Contemporary Literature, and a PhD in English Literature. Before university, I attended the Royal Grammar School Guildford, Surrey, where I took A-Levels in English, Classical Studies and Geography. I am a specialist in modern British, Irish and European literature and history, and have published several books, articles and book chapters on various topics and writers. I have held teaching posts at the University of Reading and Oxford Brookes University, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I also worked as a teaching assistant at Downsend Primary School in Leatherhead, Surrey, before my university education. My teaching is directed by careful attention to the learning styles of students to maximise both understanding and excitement in the classroom. I am recognised as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for my commitment to student-orientated learning.
